What’s the best and the worst food when you’re suffering from vitiligo?

Vitiligo is widely perceived as an autoimmune disorder, but other studies have also come up with the theory that certain nutritional deficiencies can give rise to the condition. Marked by the loss of pigment in specific areas of the skin resulting in white patches, vitiligo affects millions of people around the world. It has no permanent cure as of present, but patients have several treatment options that aim to slow down the progress of the condition. Foods that are good sources of vitamin B-12 include fortified breakfast cereals, liver, salmon, haddock, yogurt, trout and clams.

Some researchers have also theorized that increased consumption of foods rich in zinc may also be good treatment for vitiligo. Nuts, beans, dairy products, lobster, crab, beef, pork and chicken are good sources of zinc, while oysters have proven to be quite excellent as a source of zinc.

Studies have also revealed that a number of vitiligo sufferers have shown low folate levels. To make up for this deficiency, those with vitiligo need to increase their consumption of folate-rich foods, which include spinach, broccoli, asparagus, enriched breakfast cereals and black-eyed peas.
